Whether you love or hate soccer games, you will undoubtedly have witnessed those moments when the ball accidentally ends up in a supporter’s hands in the stadium. A new ball is instantly brought into the game, but more often than not, the supporter in question likes to throw the original ball back, thinking they might be helping the players out. The latter, however, have already started focusing on the new ball… The result: utter confusion! And we’re only talking 2 balls. What if every single player would be chasing after their own ball?
22 balls, 22 players: who’s still watching that game?
If a second ball already throws people into a slight frenzy, let’s take a moment to consider what would happen if each of the 22 players would be focusing on their own ball. There wouldn’t be a game anymore, right? Basically, everyone would be playing for themselves without interacting. Now that’s a game you probably wouldn’t watch. Because in the end, the interplay between two rivalling teams that each work towards a clearly defined goal (that is, winning) is what makes a soccer game interesting.
In essence, the same applies to solely working with dashboards in the office. When every employee or team gets information from their ‘own’ board, they are all working for themselves. There is no collaboration. Just like soccer needs a team ball, organizations require a common communication board that provides all employees and teams with the same essential information. Only then, they will be able to join forces and work towards a common objective.
Logical? You’d think so. But we often encounter organizations in which separate teams work with their ‘own’ dashboards. As a result, they have no clue as to what other teams a are seeing, hearing, or prioritizing. This, in turn, leads to a serious lack of collaboration and efficiency.
One team, one status quo: the beauty of visualization
What if all employees would look up to a clearly organized communication board and see the exact same information, which they can subsequently use to achieve organizational objectives? Now that is being engaged. And that is what Visual Management is all about!
